Iran wins title at Shotokan Karate-do C’ship

TEHRAN, Nov. 06 (MNA) – Iranian karate practitioners performed outstanding athletic skills and became champions at WSKF Shotokan Karate-do tournament in the Armenian capital.

The two-day international sportive event had attracted 500 karateka from eight countries. Powerhouse Iran collected 11 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals to finish in the first place overall.

Host Armenia came second while the Georgian outfit stood on the third podium.

Iran’s gold medalists comprised Alireza Nadimi, Mehran Afkhami, Hadi Habibpour, Nader Gharaei, Mahsa Safi, Bahareh Bigdeli, Helia Kamasi, Atousa Golshadnejad, Anid Halvaei as well as Hossein Rivaz. Meanwhile, one more gold trophy was clinched by Junior Kata Team of Iran which consisted of Mehran Afkhami, Hossein Pakrou and Alireza Nadimi.

Shotokan is a style of karate, developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) and his son Gigo Funakoshi (1906–1945). Gichin was born in Okinawa and is widely credited with popularizing ‘karate do’ through a series of public demonstrations, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs.
